Our history

Enlightened Origins

The building’s history dates back to 1776, a year carved into our lobby alongside the words “Guerra y Hoyo.” It was the residence of Don Fernando Guerra y Hoyo Solórzano, an enlightened nobleman of 18th-century Spain. Its halls were the setting for clandestine gatherings of intellectuals, leaving a legacy of thought and culture that still permeates the hotel’s atmosphere today.

Cradle of Knowledge and Education

Over the years, the purpose of this space evolved to become one of the island’s most important teacher training colleges. For decades, its classrooms trained generations of teachers, establishing the building as an educational pillar of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. That strategic location, which facilitated academic life, now places our guests just a short walk from the main points of interest.

The “Don Álvaro” Era

In the mid-20th century, the building became the headquarters of the prestigious “Don Álvaro” Tobacco Factory. It was a golden age for the local tobacco industry, which even had a retail outlet in New York in the 1960s. To this day, we proudly welcome visits from former workers, whose memory we preserve in a “small museum” that guests can visit next to the lobby.

Reborn as a Grand Hotel

In 2017, following a meticulous restoration, the building regained its original splendor to become La Laguna Gran Hotel. We have preserved the stately architecture and historic courtyards while incorporating 4-star amenities. Our commitment is to honor the memory of its past by offering travelers an authentic stay connected to the city’s living heritage.
